About The Artist

Roman Cieślewicz was a highly influential member of the Polish Poster School known for his bold use of photomontage, collage, and typography. Cieślewicz studied at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts and began his career designing posters and publications in Warsaw. In 1963, he moved to Paris, where he spent most of his life and later became a French citizen. There, he worked as art director for major publications like Elle and contributed to Vogue as well as many other art publications, design houses and cultural institutions. His work shaped modern editorial design and produced impactful posters, exhibition catalogues, and visual campaigns recognized worldwide.

The Polish School of Posters (roughly 1950s–1980s) was an internationally renowned art movement that combined painterly techniques with graphic design to create metaphor-driven, witty, and artistic posters. Emerging in post-WWII communist Poland, artists used symbolism, bold colors, and hand-lettering to bypass censorship and express intellectual freedom, focusing on film, theater, and circus themes.
